Haider Nozad, a member of the Iraqi National Rowing team and competitor in the 2008 Olympics, was a member of the Men's Quad that won the Director's Challenge event yesterday at the 46th Head Of The Charles Regatta. Their adjusted time was 14:56.193.
Nozad sat three seat in a boat that included former World Champion sculler Jamie Koven in bow, Michael Sivigny in two seat, and stroke Steve Whelpley. All four competed in the Men's Championship Single event on Saturday, finishing sixth, first, fifteenth and fifth, respectively.
Koven invited Nozad into the quad after one member dropped out. The two met earlier this month when they competed in a scrimmage at Riverside Boat Club. The crew practiced together once on Friday afternoon, and thought they would do well. Their hunch was right when they came up with the Gold Medal on Sunday afternoon.
Nozad has been in Boston for the past month training for the Head of the Charles with five other members of the Iraqi National Rowing Team. Four of the others competed in the Lightweight Men's 4 and finished tenth with a time of 16:46.997. All of the Iraqis finished well enough to qualify for an automatic entry in 2011.
